A Healthy Start: How To Grow An Organic Garden

Maintaining an organic garden is extremely beneficial for your diet. However, there is a fair amount of information that you must learn, including how to choose the proper equipment and tools. Additionally, there are a variety of seeds with different planting times to consider. Here are some steps you can take to ensure you get what you need to grow your organic garden.

Baking Soda

You do not need store-bought chemical treatments for plant mildew. Try mixing a little liquid soap with some baking soda in water. Spray this mixture on your plants weekly until the mildew is gone. Do not worry about your plants; the baking soda cannot harm them.

Soak your seeds in a dark spot during the overnight hours. Place some seeds into a small container, then fill it with water until it is almost to the top. That way, the seeds will have sufficient hydration and will have the best start possible. The seeds will most likely survive and mature this way.

You can alleviate this problem by planting grasses that your cat will naturally gravitate towards. You may also place something offensively smelly atop the soil, like citrus peel or mothballs.

Make sure that your deciduous shrubs are protected. Cold weather is very hard on these tender shrubs, and potted shrubs should be shielded and protected. The tops should be tied together, and the wigwam should be loosely covered with a sheet or blanket. This is a much better method, instead of putting the plastic wrap around the plant. It allows proper air circulation that can prevent rotting.

Gardening Knee Pads

If your garden contains lots of short plants, purchase some gardening knee pads. You will spend a lot of time on your knees while gardening, which can result in knee pain. Pick up a good pair of gardening knee pads to help cushion your knees.

Be sure to split the irises. You can get more irises by dividing the overgrown clumps. When you see the foliage is definitely dead, lift up the bulbous irises. The bulbs split in your hand, then you replant them, and they will most likely flower next year. Rhizomes, however, need to be divided by using a gardening knife. From the outside cut the new pieces and then get rid of the old center. If done properly, each piece that remains for planting should have a minimum of one viable offshoot. Replant right away.

A great garden starts from the seeds and not from the plants. When you begin a garden, it’s most eco friendly to do so with seed. Many nurseries use plastic growing pots that are very seldom recycled. Try buying from organic nurseries and farms so your garden is not using anti-environmental products.
