Use the handles of your tools as a handy ruler when doing your outdoor chores. Tools with long handles, such as a shovel or rake, are absolutely perfect for this job, and make your workload a little bit smaller. Lay the handles on the floor, then run the measuring tape down next to them. It’s a good idea to label distances with a permanent marker. This modified ruler will serve you well as you begin working in your garden.

If you see mildew that is powdery, stay away from expensive chemicals to treat it. Mix a solution of baking soda, water, and a tiny bit of dishwashing liquid. You then want to spray this mixture on your plants one time a week until you notice the mildew disappear. This solution is perfectly safe for your plants and gently treats mildew in a short amount of time.

Cover fences and walls with climbing plants. These types of plants can climb anything, which makes them perfect for covering up a wall or fence that needs to be hidden. You can also use them in your landscape to cover an existing arbor, or allow them to climb up trees, or through shrubs. Some climbers will attach themselves to a support using twining stems or tendrils, while other varieties need to be held up by tying them in place. Some dependable types include honeysuckle, clematis, jasmine, climbing roses, and wisteria.

When you are mowing your lawn do not cut it too closely to the dirt. If you leave a bit more height, the grass roots will get deeper, making your lawn stronger. If you have short grass, you will have short roots and you will dry out your grass.

Start your peas in a protected indoors environment rather than outside. When you plant them indoors first, the seeds will germinate better. They will also be stronger, and better equipped to resist disease and insects. When your plants are sturdy, move them outdoors.

Know the ideal times to harvest each of the vegetables you plant. There is a specific time to pick every sort of vegetable in order to maximize its taste and cooking utility.
