Make Your First Organic Garden A Success

Starting an organic garden is a smart step in creating a healthier diet. Taking care of a garden does require effort in order to make things grow. You might be wondering where you need to start to have your very own organic garden.

Strawberries are a good organic garden choice for families with strawberries, particularly everbearing strawberries. Children love to pick their own fruit right out of the garden, and will be more willing to help with the process if they get something out of it.

Pine needles make a great organic mulch. There are many types of plants with a high acidity, which means they thrive in acidic soil. If this is the case, use pine needles to mulch your beds. Cover the beds with a couple inches of needles and as they decompose, they will disperse acid to the soil.

Coffee Grounds

Coffee grounds are good for your soil. Coffee grounds are filled with nitrogen, that is a nutrient required by plants. Nitrogen is a nutrient that will help your plants grow taller and bloom faster, so use those coffee grounds, extra compost, or diluted urea to make this happen.

Old laundry baskets are handy tools at harvest time. The laundry basket will function as a makeshift strainer for the fruits and vegetables. Rinse off your produce while it’s in the laundry basket, and any excess water will be strained out through the basket’s holes.

When planting seeds in containers, plant the seed roughly three times deeper than the seed’s size. There are some seeds, however, that you should not cover at all, since they need sunlight to germinate. Examples of these are petunias and ageratum. If you are wondering whether or not the seeds require direct sunlight, you can usually find helpful information online that will answer your question.

If slugs are problematic in your garden, you can use an all-natural beer trap to do away with them. Bury a jar in the garden with it’s mouth open and level to the ground. Pour beer into the jar until it is an inch from the top. Slugs are attracted to beer. They will crawl into the jar and be trapped.

A raised bed can be built with untreated wood, brick or stone. If you choose wood, it needs to be naturally rot resistant and untreated. Some good choices include locust, cypress, and cedar. Consider the chemicals that will leach out of the wood before choosing anything that has been treated. Remember the affect that such chemicals will have on your plants and soil. If the ground cover you’ve used already contained treated lumber, line it with a barrier of some form.
