Simple Things All Organic Gardeners Should Know

Learning how to implement organic methods into your gardening will express your concern for your health and the environment. Your caring skills will shine through in the quality of your garden. This is a very good thing to do. Just like most things in life, there are continual ways to improve your skills. Below are some tips to help.

When growing organic plants indoors, it is important to consider the amount of light that is available to them. If your residential space has limited sunlight, it will be best that you grow plants that are ideal for this type of environment. If you have a different type of plant, extra lighting can always help.

Coat your flower beds with a few inches of an organic mulch. Not only will you be adding nutrients, but weeds will be less likely to grow and moisture will be retained more easily. It also adds a uniform and cohesive look to the garden.

Make gardening efficient. Don’t waste time searching for lost tools. In addition to keeping your gardening tools in one location, you should also clean your tools after each use. Invest in a tool belt or wear pants that have lots of pockets.

Coffee Grounds

Put used coffee grounds on the soil. Plants can use the nitrogenous nutrients found in coffee grounds. Nitrogen, along with phosphorous and potassium, is an important nutrient in the garden. It contributes to healthy and strong growth of the plant, but don’t overuse it.

You should always take spacing into account when placing plants in your organic garden. You can underestimate how much space you need when they are growing. The plants will inevitably need to unfurl and spread, but they also need the circulation of air from open spaces. Plan your garden carefully and leave enough space between the seeds.

Include both green and dry plant refuse in your compost. Green plant material can include old flowers, fruit waste, grass clippings, vegetable waste, and leaves. Dried plant material consists of sawdust, shredded paper, cardboard, straw, and cut-up and dried wood material. However, stay away from meats, manure from carnivores, charcoal and other potentially harmful substances.

Don’t use pesticides – kill your weeds naturally! Layer sheets of newspaper on the surface of areas where you are trying to control weeds. Weeds need sunlight to grow. When you cover weeds with newspaper layers, they suffocate due to lack of light. The paper will break down quickly and cleanly, adding to your compost. Put mulch over top to increase the attractiveness of the pile.
