Organic gardening can be an every day part of your life, but understanding how it works can be hard. There are many different types of seeds available to you. The following tips will help you make the most of your organic garden.
Are you a parent? If you are, try planting some strawberries like everbearing strawberries in your garden. For kids, there are few things as fun as picking fruit fresh from the garden. Your children will be much more interesting in helping out if they know they’ll get to enjoy some tasty strawberries.
In order to maximize the efficiency of your gardening, ensure your gardening tools are kept close by you. You can make use of a bucket, or wear pants that have plenty of pockets. Keep your gloves, a trowel, small pruning shears and other tools handy and make quick work of your garden maintenance.
In your flower beds and garden, utilize a few inches of organic mulch. Mulch will minimize weed growth and maximize nutrients and moisture. By adding mulch, you can give your flower beds a finished appearance.
Pine needles should not be overlooked as a great source for mulch. Some garden plants have a higher acidity, and prefer a more acidic soil. There is no better, or easier, way to make your acid-loving plants happy then to use pine needles you already have on your beds. Sprinkle the pine needles over your beds. As the needles decompose, they add to the acid level in the soil.
Put used coffee grounds on the soil. Coffee grounds have nitrogen that plants will utilize. Your plants will really bloom if they get the nitrogen they need from coffee grounds or compost or diluted urea.
When developing your compost pile, use equal measures of dried and green material. Green plant mulches include everything from fresh grass clippings, to unwanted vegetables, to recently pulled weeds. Dried plant material, however, can include items such as cardboard, sawdust and shredded paper. Never put meat in your compost or even the waste from your family pets. These can harbor diseases that won’t be killed by the composting process.
When planting seeds into a container, the depth of your planting should be three times bigger than the seed. There are exceptions to this rule, however. Some seeds should remain uncovered because they thrive in direct sunlight. Petunias and ageratum are two examples of seeds that require sunlight. If you don’t know whether your seeds require sun exposure, check the seed package or search online for the information.
Slugs are a nuisance that can be easily remedied with the use of an organic beer tramp. Start by burying a wide-mouth jar in the soil, ensuring that the rim of the jar is just at the soil’s surface. Pour beer into the jar until it’s almost full. Leave an inch of space between the beer and the jar top. The slugs will be drawn to the beer and then drown in the jar.
