Learn techniques that can enable you to grow a more beautiful garden for yourself, your family or your work. You can have a good idea on what you need, this way you aren’t spending money on equipment you do not need, or on seeds that will not work in your environment.
Clay soil makes working with a shovel difficult. The clay is hard and sticks to the shovel. Try applying a coat of wax onto your spade prior to working with clay soil, and then buff the spade head with a cloth. The clay will no longer stick to the shovel, and this also helps to prevent other problems like rusting.
The handles of your tools can double as clever rulers. Large handled tools like rakes, hoes or shovels may be used like measuring sticks. Lay the handles upon the floor and use a tape measure along side of them. Mark your distances with a permanent marker. Now when you go to work in the garden, you will have a ruler that is large at your fingertips!
Choose perennials that won’t be taken out by slugs. A particularly vulnerable plant can be killed by snails and slugs overnight. They’re particularly fond of perennials with smooth and thin leaves, especially if the plants are young. Some perennials are not preferred meals for snails and slugs, especially if their foliage is hairy and tough, or tastes bad. Examples of these include euphorbia, hellebourus and achillea. Others you may want to consider are campanula and heuchera.
Before you begin to plant your garden you will need to check the soil. You can actually get an analysis of soil for a little fee, and with the report you get back you can figure out how to create a vibrant garden by enriching it properly. Before you ruin any crops, make sure you do this. Soil can be analyzed at a lot of cooperative extension offices, so make sure you plan accordingly.
Take the time to remove weeds. Those nasty weeds can turn your beautiful garden into a scruffy version of its former self. To do this, think about using white vinegar. Yes, white vinegar actually kills weeds! Putting white vinegar on your plants gets rid of much of the need to pull out the weeds.
Consider growing wheat grass or cat grass near the plants your cat enjoys eating. You could also repel your pet by planting rosemary or placing citrus fruit peels around your garden.
If you want a strange, yet successful, green answer to getting rid of weeds, boil them to death. A pot of very hot water is one of the most effective ways you can get rid of the weeds in your garden. Pour hot water right on the weeds, but do not get any on your plants. The extreme heat of the water will cause damage to the weeds’ roots, which will stop them from growing any more.
You simply need to do your homework, spend some time working outdoors, and cultivate your patience. When you see your garden flourish, you will feel a satisfying sense of accomplishment.
