For many people, they will never have thought of creating a natural digging or bark terrarium. However, this is a great idea and I am going to explain why in this article. The reason is that most of us have the need for a place where we can hide from other creatures such as snakes and lizards. This usually isn’t a problem because most animals will dig their own hole. However, we can’t always dig and sometimes we need a place to burrow. This is when the natural burrowing instincts of some reptiles become quite useful.
To create a bark terrarium, you must create a very simple environment with very low humidity levels. You also need to provide a very well ventilated place to live in. A simple terrarium made out of wire mesh with a couple of pieces of rock is all you really need. Remember to keep the moisture levels as low as you don’t want your snakes to burrow and die from too much moisture. There is a lot of information on how to do this but in essence you will need a humidifier and a water pump to provide the proper humidity levels.
Another option is to use fir bark bedding to maintain proper humidity levels in your terrarium. The best type of fir bark bedding is 100% pine. This helps to prevent any problems with snakes eating your pets as they will be too afraid of them to eat.
The next step is to create the environment in your bark terrarium to simulate the burrowing behavior of the animals you would like to keep. Start by adding some rocks and gravel to give the animals something to burrow under. As the terrarium gets warmer, you can add more gravel until you have created the perfect environment for your new pets. You can also line the bottom of your terrarium with a mixture of cork and newspaper to maintain proper humidity levels.
If you are starting off small and only plan on keeping one or two animals at a time, you can place the rocks on the bottom first. Then add some soil to get the soil ready to plant your fish in. Use some small pebbles to place in their burrows. Do not use anything that could be harmful to the animal. If you use pine needles, it can cause death and illness to your pet so please avoid this.
Once the animals are fully burrowing, you can now place some vegetation on the bottom and on the sides of the terrarium. Water lilies, mosses, and shrubs are all great choices. These are not toxic and do not need to be treated as such. Just use them to help keep your animals comfortable and healthy.
When it is time to feed the animals, it is best to hand-clean the soil and water first before you put it in the terrarium. This will ensure that everything is ready to go when you place the food in. You also need to check on the burrowing periodically to make sure it is still going properly. Sometimes it will need to be watched over until it stops.
The bark terrarium has been designed with your animals in mind. The unique design allows for proper drainage and is easy to care for. Now that you know how to build a bark terrarium, you can enjoy the benefits for years to come. Your friends and family will love to have an exotic pet and you will love the care you give to it.
