One of the smartest things you can do for you and your diet is to start an organic garden. Consider your garden an investment of your time and hard work. You may be curious as to how to start the organic gardening process.
If you are growing plants organically indoors, you have to consider the light that they are getting. If your windows are small or receive little light due to their positioning, a plant that requires little sunlight will be more comfortable and healthy. If this is not an option, or you have your heart set on a particular type of plant, consider adding additional growing lights instead.
Make sure you have some plastic bags around so that you can cover any muddy gardening shoes you have. This way, you can maintain your momentum and head right back to your garden so that you can finish what you were doing.
For some plants, pine needles makes an ideal mulch. There are many types of plants with a high acidity, which means they thrive in acidic soil. Pine needles are an excellent form of mulch for these types of plants. Cover the surface of the ground with a two-inch layer of the pine needles; as the needles break down, they will release acid into the soil and nourish your plants.
Put used coffee grounds on the soil. Coffee grounds have nitrogen that plants will utilize. Usually, nitrogen is limited with a plant, but using coffee grounds, diluted urea, or compost can make your plants grow faster and taller.
Don’t let all the little chores in your organic garden build up. While you may not be able to spend a lot of time every day in your garden, even little items done daily will stop the mountain of work from growing. Grab a handful of weeds, throw down some mulch, or toss some water on it anytime you walk by.
Use a laundry basket to help you collect produce from your garden. An old laundry basket makes an excellent strainer for cleaning your produce. Rinse the produce while it sits in the basket, the extra water will go through the holes in the basket.
When maintaining your organic garden, try lightly petting your seedlings — either with the palm of your hand or something like a sheet of cardboard — once or twice each day. It sounds weird, but research has shown that handling the seedling like this often will make them grow bigger than seedlings that are ignored.
Construct raised flower beds of brick, stone, or wood. If you choose to use wood to construct your bed, choose a species that is naturally resistant to rot and avoid treated wood entirely. Some good woods are locust, cedar and cypress. Never use compost from treated woods in a veggie garden; the chemicals can contaminate your food. If you have to use treated wood, you should line it with a bit of plastic to create a barrier.
