If you’ve spent any time at all working in the garden, or planning on starting one, then you probably know how important it is to pay attention to balcony planter drainage. The chances are good that you’ll have your hands full with a lot of different projects and a lot of work on your hands as well. It’s not just the back breaking work that gets hard, you also get tired from bending down so much every day. This combined with the fact that it’s hard to enjoy what you’re doing can make apartment gardening a frustrating thing to do.
I’d like to take a moment to explain what happens when your balcony isn’t properly drains. When rain falls on your balcony, especially during the rainy season, the roots that are sprouting out from the concrete and wood will end up getting wet. This isn’t the only way that water can get in between your planters though, since large pieces of furniture can also end up soaked.
What happens is that the rain gets into the cracks of the planters. Once it is in these cracks it expands and actually makes the planter waterproof. Water is sort of stopped by the planter and then can’t get in. It sort of gives the water a chance to evaporate before it has a chance to ruin the paint on your outside walls.
Now think about this for a second. Having a waterproofed planter is one of the best things that you can do for your apartment garden. This is because it’s going to stop you from having to spend a lot of money trying to remove the water from your plants. It’s an extremely useful thing for apartment gardeners.
However, proper drainage is going to require a little bit of maintenance on your part. You have to check on it a couple of times each year. If you’re a really good gardener, you’ll be able to keep your balcony looking great without having to do anything else at all. But for most apartment dwellers they’ll need to do their part to keep their balconies nice and dry.
So what happens if your drainage isn’t ideal? Well, there are two potential problems. The first one is that your drainage might not be doing what it’s supposed to. This might be due to poor design. In this case you could get your water pipes or even the main sewer line replaced to ensure that your drainage system works as it should.
The other potential problem is that your water might end up back in your patio. Now, the reason that this would happen is that your drainage isn’t doing what it’s supposed to do – which is to drain excess water away from your plants. The problem can usually be fixed by simply cleaning out the pipe that leads to your drainage system.
This process involves getting your drainage system completely drained. This includes digging a hole of the appropriate size that will allow you to get your drainage system out. Then, you’ll just have to pump some water out of your patio. As with any other type of plumbing job, you’ll want to use professional plumbers to make sure that your drain works the way that it’s supposed to. But if you have a balcony with plant roots in it, then having good drainage is important.
Problems with drainage on patios can be particularly common when there are decks that surround your house. The reason why this is the case is because you have a bigger volume of water coming down from above. Usually, all you have to do to solve a drainage issue is to lower your patio floor level. This will cause your drainage system to be lowered and will clear up the roots that are sticking up now. To clear up any standing water, you could also use a garden hose to clear away any excess water. The only problem with doing this is that it might disturb the plant roots and you don’t want them uprooted.
If your problem with drainage on your patio continues after you’ve made all of the above fixes, then the next step may be to install a water chute. These are simply long tubes that you can put underneath the patio floor that will catch all of the excess water that falls from above. These chutes typically have a catch basin at the bottom that collects all of the water so it can be diverted away from the roots. It’s a simple solution to a complex problem and if your water levels are getting bad enough, it may be the best thing for your home.
Installing balcony planter drainage systems isn’t rocket science but it is something that requires a certain amount of skill. Don’t let that deter you though, as it is still a relatively simple process that shouldn’t take too long to complete. Just remember to do all of the work the first time so that things go smoothly the second time around.
