Your children will enjoy the experience of working with you in the organic garden. They will enjoy learning about nature and bonding with you.
If you have children, plant strawberries, especially everbearing strawberries, in your organic garden. Strawberries are a favorite of children due to their sweetness. And since they’re so easy and fun to pick, it’s also a healthy, productive, safe activity that children can assist adults with.
Water infused with aspirin is great for combating plant disease. Crush and dissolve one and one-half 325mg tablets in two full gallons of plain water. The simple practice of spraying them with the mix will help them fight off diseases. Spray them once about every three weeks.
It is easy to quickly prepare your perennial garden ground. Use your spade in a slicing motion to cut a flap of turf. Carefully turn the flap over, then cover the area with a three-inch layer of untreated wood chips. Wait two weeks, then dig in and plant the new perennials.
When mulching your flower beds, aim for anywhere between two or three inches of mulch. A thick layer of mulch will prevent weeds, reduce watering needs and fertilize your garden. This will also give a nice, professional appearance to your garden all year.
Pine can be a wonderful mulch. Some plants need acidic soil to grow properly, because of their own acid content. If that’s the case, the easiest thing to do is use pine needles for beds. Cover the surface of the ground with a two-inch layer of the pine needles; as the needles break down, they will release acid into the soil and nourish your plants.
Paying attention to spacing is important. Amateur gardeners often make the mistake of failing to leave enough space for fully matured plants. Your plants will need the space not only because of their physical size, but also because the space will provide air circulation for the garden. Make sure that you map out your garden layout beforehand and place your seeds with an adequate amount of space in between each.
When it’s harvest time, you should utilize a basket that you put laundry in to carry your veggies. An old basket will act like a strainer does. Doing this allows you to both rinse and drain your fresh produce.
The compost pile should include equal parts of dried material and green plant material. Green plant mulches include everything from fresh grass clippings, to unwanted vegetables, to recently pulled weeds. The leaves you rake in the fall, straw, sawdust and the like are dry material. Certain substances will undermine your composting efforts and cancel out any benefits; these include meat, charcoal, ash or plants that have diseases or fungal growths.
As in most things, the more you know about organic gardening, the more successful you will be. Keep in mind that the advice you’ve read is only the beginning.
