When it comes to apartment gardening there are very few good options as there are with a balcony or walkway garden. It can be a bit tricky and even dangerous to have your own flower deck or walkway garden up against a brick wall or concrete walkway for instance. This is especially true if you have young children or pets that like to jump on the railing and get caught in the gaps. Here are some tips for apartment gardening that might help you create a better flower deck or walkway garden.
The first thing that you want to do when it comes to flower deck railing and walkway plants is to plan ahead. There are a number of plants that you might be interested in or are available for your use on a balcony or walkway. For instance there are a number of plants that grow well and are relatively easy to maintain from inside your home as well as on a flower deck or walkway. These plants include shrubs, ground covers, trees and vines. They also happen to be some of the least expensive plants that you can buy and have them last a long time without having to do much maintenance or pruning.
The reason that some plants are easy to maintain while others aren’t is because they will grow just about anywhere you put them. If you plant a flower or plant that requires a lot of sunlight and exposure to the sun then you will probably want to choose a flowering plant that requires similar conditions. For example, if you plant a flower that requires plenty of sun and you place it near a shaded area you can expect the plant to bloom beautifully but only for a short time each year.
On the other hand, if you choose a flowering plant that does not need that much sun you can expect the flower to grow and bloom beautifully but you won’t have to worry about the plant dying or burning out. Some of the most common flowers and plants used in railing are roses, hydrangeas, honeysuckle, lavender, blue gardenia, tulips, gardenia and gardenias. Just about any kind of flower can be placed on a balcony railing and although most people don’t use these for interior decorative purposes most people will want to place some flowers there if they have enough space and believe it or not balcony railings even provide good places for people to sit and enjoy the view.
So what plants should you get for your balcony? Well, most people will think that they would want to plant something that has a lot of flower but you can actually do much better than that. In fact some people will choose plants like ferns, evergreens, herbs, blue blossoms, Clematis, marigolds, ruellius and ivy to help create a more elegant looking balcony rail. These are plants that usually look better in other places besides a balcony.
Most plants that are placed along a balcony rail tend to be much bushy whereas plants that are placed on other parts of a balcony will be much smaller. If you do not have much space available, you might have to choose plants that are not too bushy. For instance, if you have three different heights on your balcony rail then you might have to get two different heights of plants but make sure they are not too close together. For instance if you have a tall plant on the bottom level and two taller plants on the second level then they might attract attention to themselves but if you get a plant with nice wide leaves on the third level they could potentially become a distraction.
If you are worried about privacy then you can buy plants that have special mechanisms that stop other people from seeing inside of a room. Plants like that are generally called “birdhouses”. Some balcony rail plants will actually allow you to see through them but other plants will not let you. To avoid this try getting plants that have large leaves so if someone happens to be sitting at the top and looks in you won’t be able to tell what is going on because most plants will be green.
One very popular type of plant is the Ivy. You can usually find these in most garden centers but there are some that are even available online. They usually come as single stem plants and they can grow to be very tall. The good thing about it is that it is very easy to maintain and if you prune it regularly you will be able to keep it looking great. There are other types of plants available for balcony railings but you should consider what type of maintenance you think you will have to do before you decide.
